I was thinking on what to write today and I came across this bit on the web.

It's nice to see a wee bit of good press for a change.

kilt (k lt) n.

(1)The kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Since the 19th century it has been associated with the wider culture of Scotland in general, or with Celtic (and more specifically Gaelic) heritage elsewhere. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.

(2) skirt-like garments designed for men, but more or less different in structure from the Scottish kilt, including "contemporary kilts"

Although the Scottish kilt is most often worn mainly on formal occasions or at Highland games and sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of fashionable daily wear, informal events, and formal wear male clothing in recent years. Contemporary kilts are intended to me more practical and unlike traditional kilts, most have an abundance of pockets.
